Somorrostro dresses in pink for World Breast Cancer Awareness Day

World Breast Cancer Day, which is celebrated every 19 October, is a date of great relevance in raising awareness about this disease, which affects millions of women around the world. At Somorrostro Training Centre, we wanted to join this cause with an emotional rally of our students of ESO and Bachillerato, who, under the slogan ‘With you pink is more than a colour’, have shown their solidarity and support to all the people who face this hard battle.

During the day, the school playgrounds were dyed pink, a symbol of the fight against breast cancer, and students gathered to show their commitment to this cause. Through this action, we not only seek to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis, but also to send a message of hope to all those who are fighting the disease.

The impact of breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide. It is estimated that, in Spain alone, around 34,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Fortunately, thanks to advances in research, 85% of women who suffer from this disease survive at least five years after diagnosis and the percentage increases when detection is early. Hence the importance of campaigns like this one, which promote self-examination, regular mammograms and awareness of the symptoms.

Why pink?

The colour pink has been adopted globally as the symbol of the fight against breast cancer. The pink ribbon, which began to be used in the 1990s, is today an icon of awareness of the disease and a reminder of the importance of support and solidarity towards those affected. By wearing pink and decorating spaces with this colour, we want to contribute to making this cause visible, reminding our entire educational community that, with small gestures, we can make a big difference.

How we can help

In addition to activities such as the one we have organised in Somorrostro, it is essential to continue supporting breast cancer research and treatment. Knowing the risk factors, encouraging healthy habits and carrying out regular check-ups are key steps to reduce the chances of suffering from this disease.

At our school, we believe that education is a driving force for change, and for this reason, we want to continue to raise awareness among our students about the importance of these actions. This type of initiative reinforces values such as empathy, respect and solidarity, essential aspects in the integral education of our students.

A message of hope

Through this rally, Somorrostro wants to send a message of hope to all the people who are fighting against breast cancer. Collective support is a key element in the recovery process, and every gesture counts. On this World Breast Cancer Day, we remind you that you are not alone and that we can continue to move towards a more hopeful future together.
