Innovation in VET: Maintenance 4.0, a leap towards the future

We continue to make progress in the presentation of the innovation projects in which our school is involved, with 22 of them funded by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports (MEC). Today we highlight the project ‘“Mantenimiento 4.0 para sistemas de transmisión industrial”, led by our teachers Christian Calderón and Jorge Monja, from the Industrial Mechatronics and Industrial Maintenance Digitalisation specialisation courses.

This project has the collaboration of prestigious centres such as the IES Via de la Plata, which leads the initiative, the IMH of Elgoibar and the company SMC España, specialised in industrial automation, whose headquarters are located in Vitoria.

The main objective of the project is the creation of a mock-up that simulates a wide variety of industrial transmission systems, allowing students to practice maintenance interventions, perform measurements, solve typical breakdowns and learn advanced alignment methods, all in a safe and controlled environment. Thanks to this mock-up, students can familiarise themselves with the real-life operation of chains, belts and gears, replicating industrial situations in a practical way.

What is most innovative is that the model includes programmes that can be controlled from mobile devices or tablets, which makes it possible to simulate faults and real situations in the company so that students can analyse and act accordingly. This tool offers an experience close to industrial reality without the need for expensive machines in vocational training workshops.

Christian and Jorge, together with the teachers of the collaborating schools, are currently immersed in the training process on the use of the model, with the support of Allecop, SMC’s official distributor in the north of Spain. The aim is to fully master the tool in order to design Ethazi challenges that will be implemented in the classroom next year.

Both teachers are convinced that this project will mean a qualitative leap for the maintenance training cycles at our centre. Jorge, with previous experience in innovation projects, and Christian, in his first project of this type, are excited about the opportunities for both professional and personal growth that this participation will offer them.
