Somorrostro and Mondragon University share classrooms and workshops to provide training in mechatronics engineering

Second-year students on the Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Mondragon Unibertsitatea are already undertaking practical training at the Somorrostro Training Centre. On this occasion, they have been working in the Metrology laboratory on activities related to the Mechanical Technology module.

This initiative forms part of the collaboration between the two institutions to jointly deliver the Bachelor’s Degree in Mechatronics Engineering, a degree programme linked to cutting-edge industry and the challenges of Industry 4.0. Teaching staff from Mondragon Unibertsitatea and Somorrostro are involved in the teaching, and students make use of the classrooms, workshops and laboratories at both centres.

At Somorrostro, some of the Mechanical Engineering practical sessions relating to metrology, materials and fluids are held. This enables students to apply the knowledge they have acquired in a technical environment and to work with the equipment and procedures typical of their professional field.

The degree programme combines knowledge of mechanics, electronics and industrial computing. The face-to-face component of the programme has a strong dual focus, with work placements in companies and a final-year project linked to the industrial sector in Bizkaia. The degree comprises 240 ECTS credits and lasts four years, although this can be reduced to three years for students entering the programme from an advanced vocational training course.

The partnership between Mondragon Unibertsitatea and Somorrostro, which has been in place for six years now, enables the sharing of knowledge, teaching staff and facilities, and strengthens the links between the university, vocational training and local businesses. This partnership helps to prepare professionals for an industry that is constantly evolving.
