MÁSTER-HIDRÓGENO

Enrolled in the Aita Mari

From the 24th to the 28th of January we are celebrating the Week of PEACE in the centre with the aim of raising awareness of the reality of people in transit. Among other activities, it is worth mentioning the “online” connection we have made with the maritime rescue ship Aita Mari of the NGO Salvamento Marítimo Humanitario. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the 2,000 students from the school learned about the project carried out by this Basque NGO from Oscar Fernández, the ship’s captain, and the rest of the crew.

Our students asked them countless questions, from how they finance the project, to whether they carry psychological help on the boat, or whether they are still banned from some ports. Oscar told them about the mafias in the south (from Libya,…) and the mafias in the north (those under the auspices of Europe), about the business that some groups have with the trafficking of people, arms or drugs, he told them how many rescues they have already carried out and how many people (about 1,000 already in their six missions). There were many questions about the type of food they carry and how they manage the waste generated on the boat (rice, couscous, pulses, etc.), what they do if someone has COVID and even what they should do if a woman goes into labour on the boat (there is always a doctor among the 13 crew members).

A luxury activity that has also had repercussions in the media, as reflected in the double report by DEIA and the interview on Radio Popular. Here are the links to these news items:
