Last Thursday, September 18, our center once again became a meeting point for solidarity. The mobile unit of the Basque Country Blood Donors Association was set up at the entrance to Villarías, allowing students, staff, and families to come and donate.
The event was preceded by several talks given the previous day by Iñigo Salaverri, Head of Blood Donation Promotion in Bizkaia (Basque Center for Transfusion and Human Tissues). Through these sessions, aimed at higher education students, Iñigo explained:
- What happens to the blood after each donation 🧪
- How it is separated into different components (plasma, platelets, and red blood cells) 💉
- The different uses in patients who need it: from surgical operations, cancer treatments, or transplants, to traffic accidents or complicated births 🚑
- How many donations are made per day in the Basque Country and how many would be needed to meet demand
Thanks to your intervention, our students gained a better understanding of the importance of such a simple yet vital gesture.
👉 On the donation day, we received 21 effective donations, although more students came with the intention of donating. In some cases, they were unable to do so due to various medical factors, but their initiative also deserves great recognition. 👏
From the Somorrostro Training Center, we would like to congratulate and thank everyone who participated. Every drop of blood donated is life for those who need it, and the solidarity shown by our educational community is once again an example of commitment and generosity. 💜
