Vocational training continues to evolve and adapt to the real needs of the workplace. This academic year marks a turning point in that journey: for the first time on a widespread basis, first-year students across all vocational training levels—Basic, Intermediate and Advanced—are joining the General Dual Training scheme, combining their classroom learning with work experience from the very start.
At Somorrostro, this transformation is reflected in a very significant figure: over the coming weeks, more than 600 first-year vocational training students will experience their first taste of the world of work. This is an important step that reinforces the centre’s commitment to practical training that is grounded in reality and geared towards each individual’s future.
This new model, developed in line with the vocational training framework introduced in 2024, stipulates that work-based learning should form part of the training pathway from the first year onwards. In this way, students not only acquire technical knowledge in the classroom, but also begin to develop professional skills in real-world contexts, thereby enhancing their preparation and employability from the very start of the course.
The General Dual Training programme involves an increase in the number of hours spent in the workplace and greater continuity of this experience throughout the two academic years. During the first year, students will undertake a training placement at partner companies or organisations; this will form part of the curriculum and provide an initial insight into how the professional world works.
Beyond the statistics, this change represents a key opportunity: learning by doing, in direct contact with the sector, gaining first-hand knowledge of how work is carried out, what is expected of them, and what paths may open up in their professional future.
Furthermore, this model facilitates the involvement of a greater number of businesses, including micro-enterprises, local shops and self-employed professionals, thereby expanding the network of collaboration and bringing vocational training even closer to the world of work.
In short, the introduction of Dual Training from the first year reinforces an idea that is key at Somorrostro: training cannot be understood without a connection to the real world. And this year, more than ever, that connection begins from day one.
