Iker Marrón: a life without limits, now heading for the desert

To speak of Iker Marrón is to speak of resilience, talent, hard work and, above all, inspiration. Those who know him well cannot help but be moved when they recall his time at the school and the lasting impact he continues to make every day.

Since he was a child, Iker has lived with a rare condition: muscular atrophy, a neuromuscular disorder that affects the limbs and limits mobility. However, this has never held him back. His determination has broken down physical and mental barriers, and today, as a member of staff at the centre, he continues to prove that there are no limits when there is passion.

Having completed his entire academic journey at Somorrostro —from San Juan Ikastetxea through to Sixth Form and two higher-level courses—, Iker is currently part of the Virtual Reality Classroom, where he advises, designs and trains students in cutting-edge technologies such as Unity and SIMLAB-VR.

But Iker never stops dreaming. And, above all, he never stops making those dreams come true.

AN ADVENTURE THAT GOES BEYOND A SIMPLE TRIP

Next week, Iker is setting out on a new adventure: a gruelling off-road journey through Morocco that will take him through some of the most extreme landscapes on the planet.

“It’s a personal challenge I’ve had for a long time. It’s a way of finding out just how far we can go,” he explains enthusiastically.

This isn’t a competition. There are no rankings or prizes. Just one challenge: to put yourself to the test. Together with his family and friends, he will cover thousands of kilometres over ten days, crossing the Atlas Mountains, venturing into parts of the Moroccan Sahara and tackling long off-road stages across rocky terrain, endless tracks and sand dunes.

“It’s going to be many hours a day in the car. It’s going to be tough, but also very exciting,” he admits.

BETWEEN DREAM AND CHALLENGE

The desert has always been one of Iker’s great passions. And this trip also has a very special aspect to it: in a way, it is his own personal ‘simulation’ of the Dakar Rally, an experience he has always dreamed of having. “My big dream is to compete in the Dakar Rally. This trip is a way of getting a little closer to what that experience would be like,” he admits.

During the adventure, he will even have the support of a driver with Dakar experience, who will teach them how to drive on dunes, one of the most technical and demanding challenges of the route. But beyond the adventure and the adrenaline, there is something that particularly defines this project.

AN ADVENTURE WITH HEART

Iker’s journey will not just be a personal challenge. It will also have a charitable aspect. Along the way, the team will carry school supplies, clothing and small items to distribute in areas where poverty is a daily reality.

“We want to learn about their culture and also do our bit by bringing some aid to the children there,” he explains. A gesture that reflects, once again, the values he has always upheld: commitment, empathy and a desire to contribute.

SOMORROSTRO PRIDE

At Somorrostro, we firmly believe that education goes far beyond the classroom. People like Iker prove this every day. His story is proof that it is not difficulties that define people, but the attitude with which they choose to face them.

Now, Iker is preparing to take on one of the biggest challenges of his life. And he’s doing it as always: with enthusiasm, courage and a smile. From here, the whole educational community wishes him all the best on this incredible adventure.

Because if anyone can go far… it’s him.
