New ‘Erquicia’ building: technology, sustainability and innovation at the service of learning

The new Erquicia building, recently rebuilt in the Somorrostro Training Centre, will become one of the pillars of the Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence and Big Data project, promoted by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sport. This modern infrastructure will house the Energy Hub and classrooms specialising in AI and Big Data, and will also be the setting for an ambitious innovation project with a transformative vocation.

As part of the new phases of the excellence project, an advanced monitoring system for the building is being implemented, with the aim of analysing its energy and environmental performance in real time. To this end, sensors will be installed to collect key data such as temperature, humidity, air quality and wind speed, among others.

All this information will be stored in a non-relational database (NoSQL) and represented through an intuitive visual interface that will allow comparing the real performance of the building with the theoretical models foreseen in its design.

One of the most innovative aspects will be the creation of a digital twin of the building: a virtual replica that will show its state and behaviour in real time. This tool will make it possible to simulate different scenarios and predict how the structure will respond to environmental changes, facilitating efficient, sustainable management based on real data.

The project is led by professors Paola Álvarez and Jon Ander Maiz, and has the collaboration of leading companies in the sector. Its purpose goes beyond technical analysis: it aims to become a first-class educational resource that brings students closer to the challenges of smart architecture and sustainability, and serves as a model for future efficient and connected buildings.

Con este tipo de iniciativas, Somorrostro reafirma su compromiso con la innovación, el desarrollo sostenible y la formación avanzada en tecnologías emergentes.
