At the Somorrostro Training Center, we were fortunate to host a much-needed and impactful talk on a topic that is still rarely discussed: breast cancer in men.
Students from different training cycles and high school were able to hear the testimonies of Norberto Bilbao, a member of the Muskiz Breast Cancer Association (ACCM), and Mikel Reyes, a computer scientist, nutritionist, and expert in emotional management. Both are breast cancer survivors and wanted to share their personal experiences with our students, from diagnosis to recovery.
Norberto and Mikel emphasized the importance of early detection and self-examination, reminding us that breast cancer does not discriminate based on gender and that many men delay seeking medical attention due to a lack of knowledge. “There are cases in which symptoms are ignored for months simply because people think that breast cancer is a disease that only affects women,” they pointed out.
They also discussed emotional management after diagnosis, the need to put emotions—fear, anger, uncertainty—into words, and how learning to live with them can be key to coping with the disease.
The talk also featured Dr. María del Mar Vivanco, a biochemist and leading researcher at the CIC bioGUNE center, who gave a clear and informative explanation of the different types of breast cancer, risk factors, the importance of biomedical research, and the advances being made in new diagnostic methods and treatments. Without a doubt, this was a session that left a lasting impression on our students, combining personal testimonies, science, and health education.
Eskerrik asko bihotz-bihotzez to Norberto, Mikel, and María del Mar for sharing their knowledge, hope, and life experiences.
