This morning we celebrated at Somorrostro the Opening Ceremony of the Global Classroom 2025, an international meeting that brings together students from seven countries around the theme “Learn locally, think globally” and with an urgent central theme: the fight against climate change.
The ceremony was presided over by the mayor of Muskiz, Eduardo Briones, accompanied by the councilor of Education, Ainara Leiba, and the pedagogical responsible of the center, Txema Saenz. After a heartfelt welcome by our students of 1st Baccalaureate, Lezo and Amets, the mayor has welcomed the more than 70 international students participating in this edition of the Global Classroom to the municipality.
Txema Sáenz then welcomed students, teachers and host families to the center, before giving way to one of the most symbolic moments of the event: the official presentation of each delegation, accompanied by the traditional photo in front of the flags.
The participating schools are:
- Anderson High School (Lerwick, Islas Shetland, Escocia)
- Bobergsgymnasiet (Ånge, Suecia)
- Graf-Friedrich Schule (Diepholz, Alemania)
- Gymnazium Zlín (Zlín, República Checa)
- Lake Ginninderra College (Canberra, Australia)
- South Peninsula High School (Ciudad del Cabo, Sudáfrica)
- CF Somorrostro (Muskiz, Bizkaia)
During the ceremony, Kirsten, a South African student participant in the 2024 edition, who tragically passed away one month after the event, was remembered with emotion. An affectionate message was also dedicated to Ridgewood High School (New Jersey, USA), which was unable to attend on this occasion.
After the group photo, the students continued their work on the effects of climate change and possible solutions from a global and local perspective.
🌿 An intense week of activities for living, sharing and transformation
Since their arrival in the Basque Country on June 4, the Global Classroom 2025 participants have experienced an unforgettable cultural and educational immersion. They began with a coexistence camp at BBK Urdaibai, in the Biosphere Reserve, where they participated in team building activities, routes through the natural environment and workshops of the Klimabentura program.
Since day 6, the students have been living with families of the school’s students, which allows them to learn first-hand about Basque daily life, culture and traditions. In addition to the academic and environmental work, they have enjoyed an intense cultural agenda:
🎨 Visit to the Guggenheim Bilbao
🌊 Route along the coast of Itsaslur
🏛️ Tour of the historic center of Bilbao
💃 Euskal dantzak & herri kirolak
This Friday we will celebrate the closing gala, where the host country of the 2026 edition will be announced and we will say ikusi arte to a week that will surely remain engraved in everyone’s memory.
